Sonja was covering medicine and hospitalization costs for children in Ya Za Gyo Monastic Education Center in Yangon through Burnett Institute Myanmar.
Ya Za Gyo Monastic Education Center is located on the outskirts of Yangon City in Dagon Seik Kan Township. It was founded as a monastery in 2000 and later became a Buddhist monastic education center. When the founder, the head monk, saw children fishing in ponds, collecting plastic bags from garbage etc., he decided to give them a chance for education, believing it can ensure a better future for them. He started with 10 children from the neighborhood, now, there are over 1400 children from different townships studying in the centre.. They are either orphans or from disadvantaged families. As the centre did not have neither a medical doctor nor a clinic, Sonja has responded to their call for help and started providing an ongoing monthly fund for medicine and hospitalization costs for the children studying there.
